Japanese Tattooing Demonstration

Live Tattoo Artist Demonstration
Time: 11:00am
Location: Mahaney Center for the Arts, Lower Lobby

NaKona MacDonald, Tattoo Artist

As a lifelong maker of things and an experienced tattooer and tattoo collector, NaKona MacDonald has synthesized multiple traditions in relating to the form and function of full body tattooing. His style was gradually developed in the pressurized atmosphere of a San Francisco walk-in tattoo shop, but draws heavily from varied traditions such as U.S. folk art, Hawaiian tribal art, Japanese printmaking and ceramics, European etching, ink work, punk/street art, fine art figure drawing, botanical illustration, and California funk sculpture.

Throughout this six-hour demonstration he will be working on a client with a large dragon tattoo spanning the entirety of his back. Visitors can come and go as they please at any point during the event and stay as long as they like. The event will include a sake bar from 4–6 pm. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibition Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World.
