Materiality and Subjectivity in the Woodblock Prints of Die Brücke

Illustrated Lecture
Time: 4:30pm
Location: Mahaney Center for the Arts, Room 125

Daniel Hackbarth, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Art History, Colgate University

In this talk, Daniel Hackbarth, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Art History, Colgate University will examine the woodblock prints of the German Expressionist artist group Die Brücke (1905–1913), focusing on the direct encounter between metal tools, viscous ink, and fibrous wood these images recorded. Rather than depicting the Innerlichkeit (inwardness) of a stable subjectivity, Professor Hackbarth will contend that these prints instead suggest the ongoing construction of the self through an intentionally laborious artistic process yielding often unpredictable results. By attending to the irregularities of their woodblock prints, he uncovers a set of deeper connections linking Die Brücke to a subsequent generation of Dadaist artists whose unwieldy photomontages and assembled sculptures embodied a technology of destructive friction rather than expedient function.
