Time: 12:15pm
Location: Mahaney Center for the Arts, Dance Theatre and Museum

In 1968 Middlebury acquired a painting of the Old Testament heroine Judith with the Head of Holofernes. Over time its attribution to Hans Von Aachen (1522–1615), a Mannerist German artist, was called into question. A multi-year quest ensued, running through art fairs, museums, galleries and auction houses in Holland, Italy, France, and New York and involving an international cast of scholars, dealers and curators. The outcome is the painting's reattribution to Orazio Samacchini (1532–1577) an influential Mannerist artist from Bologna. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art and the Committee on the Arts. Lunch is provided. $5 donation suggested; free to College ID cardholders.
