Languages in the Museum + Portraits of the African-American Experience

Gallery Talk x2
Time: 2:00pm
Location: Middlebury College Museum of Art

Pieter Broucke, Associate Curator of Ancient Art, and William Hart, Associate Professor of History

Pieter Broucke, Associate Curator of Ancient Art, will give an overview of The Language Schools at the Museum, an exhibition he co-curated with Sabarsky Graduate Fellow Peter Moore ’14 to celebrate the centennial of the Middlebury Language Schools. The exhibit, which includes two works for each language, strikes a balance between historical and contemporary works, highlights the geographic reach of each language, and provides surprising juxtapositions of subject matter.

Associate Professor of History William Hart, who co-curated Many Thousand Gone: Portraits of the African-American Experience with the students in his Spring 2015 “African American History” course, will review the history of the exhibit’s approximately 100 photographs—covering more than 125 years of black life in the United Sates—from the exhaustive yet little known collection of George R. Rinhart, one of the foremost collectors of American photography.
