Illustrated Lecture
Time: 4:30pm

Pieter Broucke, Director of the Arts and Associate Curator of Ancient Art

Middlebury’s collection of Greek pottery started in 1944 when Middlebury alumnus K. S. Twitchell donated some Cypriot vases to the college. In 1969 the first acquisition made by the Friends of the Art Museum was a Late-Archaic black-figure lekythos. Since then the museum’s Greek pottery holdings have developed into a cohesive teaching collection from which the history and techniques of Greek pottery, ancient iconography, the methodology of attribution, and ethics in collecting can be studied first-hand.
