Environment and Object in Recent African Art: Issues, Artists, and Objects

Lisa Aronson, Associate Professor of Art History, Skidmore College, John Weber, Dayton Director, Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, and Viyé Diba, artist-in-residence

Including world renowned artists such as El Anatsui and Yinka Shonibare, Environment and Object is one of the first shows to examine how natural, urban, and economic environments are shaping contemporary art production on the African continent itself and by African artists working abroad. Co-curators Aronson and Weber will provide an overview of the exhibition and offer insight into the varied issues Environment and Object engages, tracing its germination and focus. Cosponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art and the Friends of the Art Museum. Seating is limited and is available on a first-come first-served basis.
