Christopher Bedford, Curator of Exhibitions, Wexner Center for the Arts, The Ohio State University, will discuss the content of the exhibition, Mixed Signals, as it relates to popular notions of masculinity and sport, and explore whether or not the exhibition suggests the possibility for a new democracy of sports and sports fandom through art. Cosponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art and the Friends of the Art Museum.

Big Men in Slow Motion: The Autumnal Turn in Contact Sports

Tim Spears, Professor of American Studies

Tim Spears, professor of American studies, will give a talk focusing on the lives and representations of athletes who once competed in violent contact sports, such as boxing and football, and explore the meanings that Americans attach to the aging or diminished male body.

In conjunction with the exhibition Mixed Signals, the Museum presents a single screening of two works by the artist Matthew Barney (American, born 1967): Cremaster 4, 1994, single-channel video with sound, 42 minutes, courtesy of Gladstone Gallery, New York; and Drawing Restraint 10, 2005, single-channel video without sound, 59 minutes, courtesy of Gladstone Gallery. Free. Refreshments between screenings.
