Marginal Mysteries: An Investigation into Middlebury’s 13th Century French Corbel

Gallery Talk
Time: 4:30pm
Location: Middlebury College Museum of Art

Amanda Perry '11, Arthur and Helen Baer Teaching Assistant

With very little written today about its abbey of origin, there are many mysteries about Middlebury’s medieval French corbel. What function did its grotesque imagery serve at the abbey of Notre Dame du Bourg Dieu? Where exactly was this fragment formerly anchored? In her talk Amanda Perry ’11, the Arthur and Helen Baer Teaching Assistant in the Museum’s Education Department, will advance her conjectures about the imagery and function of the Middlebury corbel by exploring other representations of acrobats in marginal sculpture as well as the broader tradition of medieval monastic art and architecture.
