Sports and Resistance in the United States: A Political Legacy

Time: 4:30pm
Location: Mahaney Center for the Arts, Concert Hall

Dave Zirin, author and award winning sports writer for the Nation magazine

Dave Zirin, provocative author and award winning sports writer for The Nation magazine, will look at the history of the way athletes have used their sporting platform to speak out for social change. He will examine the effects of public discourse when athletes speak out and why it has a disproportionate and at times totally unexpected impact. Cosponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art and the Friends of the Art Museum.

Zirin is an outspoken and widely acclaimed pundit in the sports world. His books and blog posts offer ground breaking commentary on the trends and controversies that are shaping sports today. He has been called “the best sportswriter in the United States” by Robert Lipsyte, and he was named one of the UTNE Reader’s “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Our World.”

Zirin is a highly entertaining no-holds-barred speaker who is not shy about his convictions and always has the evidence to back them up. Following are links to several videos of zirin speaking. Note to viewers: these clips are somewhat controversial, and the language is at times colorful.
