“The Mythical Triumph of Gothic Style in Early Renaissance Florence”

Time: 4:30pm
Location: Mahaney Center for the Arts, Room 221

Laurence Kanter, Lionel Goldfrank III Curator of Early European Art, Yale University Art Gallery

Lorenzo Ghiberti’s successful bid to win the commission for sculpting the bronze doors of the Baptistery in Florence in 1403 is commonly perceived as establishing the Gothic style as the dominant decorative form in that city, supplanted only twenty years later with the advent of Masaccio and a swing to the Classical ideals of Donatello and of Filippo Brunelleschi. This lecture introduces a number of alternative readings of history that are intended to suggest a more complex but perhaps less confusing story.
