Theatricality and Taboo: A Look at Kara Walker’s Silhouettes

Gallery Talk
Time: 12:15pm
Location: Middlebury College Museum of Art, Cerf Gallery

J Finley, Assistant Professor of American Studies

J Finley, Assistant Professor of American Studies, will discuss works from Kara Walker’s monumental print cycle Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), exploring how the artist uses theatricality, citation, and satire to remind viewers of the importance of looking back. What does the appropriation of the format of the 19th-century silhouette enable us to see, and what kinds of interventions is Walker making? Seating is limited; please arrive early. Part of the Fridays at the Museum series.
