In the fall of 1994 the President and Board of Trustees of Middlebury College adopted a “One Percent for Art” policy recommended by an ad-hoc Committee on Art in Public Places (CAPP). This decision set aside one percent of the cost of any renovation or new construction at the college for the purchase, installation, maintenance, and interpretation of works of art publicly displayed on campus.
With the adoption of this policy, which came within two years of the completion of the Center for the Arts and the Museum of Art, the Trustees formalized the existence of CAPP and signaled that the arts would come to play an increasingly important role in Middlebury’s institutional identity.
Since then the committee has overseen the selection and placement of 19 works of art on campus, all fully accessioned into the Museum’s collection and maintained by Museum staff. CAPP has also undertaken to engage the campus community in the selection and placement process and to inform students, faculty, staff, and visitors about the selection process as well as the benefits of maintaining a public art program.

CAPP Walking Tour, Narrated by John Hunisak
On several occasions John Hunisak, Professor of History of Art and Architecture and the original chair of the Committee on Art in Public Places, has led groups on a walking tour of Middlebury's campus sculpture. Recently he recorded an audio version of this popular tour, and we are making it available here for download by those who wish to have the benefit of his insights as they browse the campus collection.
Below is a link to the entire walking tour as a zip file (43MB) as well as links to the individual audio files for each work. You can left click the link for the entire tour to download and unzip the file, left click each individual track link to play the track in your browser, or right click each track link and save the files to your computer.
